The Buttery Restaurant History

The Buttery

During the War of 1812, Niagara-on-the-Lake was bombarded by many terrible battles and raging fires. Today the town is still under siege, but by many excited tourists shooting cameras instead of cannons. And there is good reason for the ongoing invasion. Besides having the reputation as one of the prettiest towns in Canada, Niagara-on-the-Lake also has a very impressive history. The Town has retained its 19th century charm and is a wonderful place to explore with its forts, grand mansions, colourful gardens and parks, and a wide variety of gift shops and boutiques. Situated at the mouth of the powerful Niagara River, Niagara-on-the-Lake played a key role in the War of 1812, as well building much of early Canada's commerce through it's ports. Most recently Niagara-on-the-lake has become a center for tourism and the arts, recognized for it's beautiful scenery, old-country charm and the Shaw Festival Theater.

Shortly after the War of 1812 the Buttery was born, serving weary sailors who had traveled many miles and were allowed to rest while their goods were transferred over land from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. Niagara-on-the-Lake was the last stop before the Niagara Falls and was therefore a very busy port. Well today the Buttery is still very much a restaurant serving weary travelers. With over 1,000,000 people visiting our little town every year, the Buttery is definitely kept lively. Our belief is that every person that comes through our doors deserves special attention from our staff because each one of our guests could have just arrived from a far off land and needs a little time to relax and be spoiled.

Proudly run for over 30 years by the Niemann family, the Buttery is a restaurant of true Niagara Heritage. We thrive on our ability to make each one of our customers feel at home while they enjoy one of our delicious meals served with the warmth and professionalism that only three decades of service can provide.
